Clubs & Organizations

Art Club

Art Club is for any student, in any grade. You do NOT have to be in an art class in order to sign up. We are responsible for keeping the school as creative & colorful as possible – we create backdrops for Homecoming, the Family Dance & Prom. We help with any spirit week decorations or banners needed. The club is definitely for anyone creative!

Christmas Club

In this club, we decorate the school during Christmas. We hang lights, talk about how much we love Christmas and listen to music.

Cyclones for Life

In this club, students have opportunities to promote and support the sanctity of human life in all its forms through prayer and education.

Debate Club

Debate club is a group working on the development of arguing while maintaining a respectful environment with classmates on a wide variety of topics. Topics can range from simple things such as a professional athlete to debates covering social media. Our goal is to understand different perspectives, gain confidence in public speaking, learn new information and immerse members in a fun, yet competitive environment.

FCA

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a community working to see the world transformed by Jesus Christ through the influence of athletes. We seek to make disciples through our methods of engaging, equipping, and empowering athletes to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same. We desire to see every athlete enter into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ and His church. F.C.A. is open to all students. We usually meet on Sunday evenings, 2-3 times a month.

F.I.R.E.

Friends Involved in Resistance Education is a student-organized prevention club to help spread the word of healthy living. The main outreach of the club is to encourage students to be drug free and alcohol free.

French Club

Bonjour! The French club is an extracurricular for Francophiles! The student officers run the club. It meets after school monthly and discusses French culture, food, movies, art or what the students are interested in.

Gaming Club

Gaming Club is an opportunity for anyone that has a passion for video games. The club meets weekly for an hour after school to play various games on Switch and Wii consoles. You do not need to provide your own console but are welcome to if you would like. Dues are $5 for the school year.

German Club

German club explores the German language and culture. Anyone is welcome to join.

International Students' Organization

The SHG International Students Club is for SHG students from foreign countries, meeting monthly to share experiences and support each other. International Students have quarterly social outings to get to know Springfield and celebrate the international community of SHG!

Key Club

Key Club is a student led organization that teaches leadership through service to others. We work closely with the Kiwanis international family and the community. We have meetings every Tuesday at 7:30am. Anyone can join and it is a great opportunity to gain service hours.

Math Team

Math team is a club for students who enjoy math and competition. The team practices January – April.

O.P. Teen

Students in this organization are devoted to strengthening the awareness of Dominican charism to SHG. They promote the four pillars: Service, Prayer, Study and Community. 

Poetry Club

Poetry club provides a safe place where students can share their poetry, poems they have read and related to, and receive constructive criticism.

Reading Club

We meet every 4-6 weeks and talk about the books we are reading or have read. Students can give recommendations too. We eat snacks, do crafts and talk about books!

Scholastic Bowl

The SHG Scholastic Bowl team is an IHSA-sponsored group that competes in the CS8 Conference during the months of November and December. Matches consist of twenty toss-up questions between two teams of five members. Beyond the conference season, we also play in Saturday tournaments in the winter months of January and February. Membership is open to anyone.

Science Olympiad

The Science Olympiad is like an academic track meet. Teams compete in 23 events for regional and state tournament medals. The events can range from taking a test in a science related field, to building events like towers or robots. Each year, a portion of the events are rotated to reflect the ever-changing nature of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation.

Social Justice Club

The Social Justice Club provides a space where students can come together to discuss various social justice topics.

Spanish Club

The Spanish Club is designed to promote awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the people of the Hispanic/Latino world. We meet monthly and anyone can join.

Spectrum Club

Spectrum Club is a group of students that get together to talk about themselves and their lives. We share issues we may be having. We do art projects and have treats. We just are a group that is there for anyone who needs us.

Student Ambassadors

The Student Ambassadors provide information to area middle school students and junior high students interested in attending SHG. They participate in a variety of student marketing activities and extracurriculars.

Student Council

Student government at SHG has its form of Student Council. The Executive Board is elected by the student body. This club encourages leadership and student input. They organize homecoming events, service activities, and Spirit activities for game days.

W.Y.S.E.

WYSE is a test-taking competition that has been run by the University of Illinois for about 40 years. In this competition, it is all written tests in many subject areas. Students sign up to take tests in certain subject areas against other high schools and can advance to regional, sectional and state competitions. Usually WYSE is only for upperclassmen, given the content that must be known.
